Last year we transfered all our subject guides into a new format that allows much more control and flexibility to create resources relevant to particular needs. I have already worked with some teachers to put together guides for specific programs. I have also added some pages within the guides for particular courses, see for example TCHE2114, TCHE2132, TCHE2126, TCHE2202. We can create links to the catalogue for course readings and relevant subject headings, list some key databases, link some guides and tutorials, and link some websites. If you would like to me to create a page like this for your course just let me know.

We have just created a new online subject guide for Career education and development. As with all the education guides we are very happy to receive suggestions about items to be included.

How can we make our School of Education library subject guides more useful?

October 10, 2008

As I’ve mentioned previously, we have now transferred our School of Education subject guides across to the new libguide format and have developed a number of new ones. I thought I would try now to attend various program meetings to promote them and see if there is any way we can improve them. You will see that these guides list key subject areas, journals, databases, websites, reference information for the various program areas within the School.

I’m happy to receive suggestions on better ways to organise them, resources to include, resources that are not really needed, new guides to develop. If you would like help linking them into your online course I can do that also.

Finally, these guides are very easy to put together and update so we can create resource guides for very particular purposes. We can also create a page within one of the guides for a particular course.

All education subject guides now in the new format

August 27, 2008

We have now transferred the last of our guides to the new Libguide format. You will see that each guide is divided into different pages or tabs for different types of resources. I’m happy to take requests to link any of these into your online course, to add resources or links, or even create new guides. The latest guides include:

Foundation studies resources
Tertiary teaching and learning
Educational leadership
Education

The general “Education” guide might be a good place for staff and postgraduates to start if they are looking for an overview of some key resources.

Adult Education and Training

June 17, 2008

Yep, its another libguide.

Children’s literature libguide

June 13, 2008

Another day, another libguide: this time for children’s literature. And see the page for the Children’s Book Council of Australia 2008 Book of the Year shortlist.

Teacher education libguides

June 3, 2008

We have now added two more libguides to make up a group of teacher education guides:

I have written enough about these previously but I will mention that I gave a class this morning to the course TCHE2189/2230 Researching learning and was able to incorporate a page to material for this course into the Early childhood guide.

ESL libguide

May 20, 2008

Since going ahead with the purchase of “libguides” we have begun transferring more of the existing guides into the new format. The first is the ESL guide. We have updated this guide and included a page of TESOL resources.

Two Libguide tutorials

April 30, 2008

I have used our new Libguides software to develop a couple of teacher education subject guides. I have also used these to develop two online tutorials.

The most recent tutorial to be developed is Library Skills for Foundation Studies. We have been teaching quite a lot of foundation studies classes over the last couple of weeks. There are 14 groups in the first intake which means 28 hours of library research skills classes (phew); that doesn’t even count the library tours and the catalogue exercise that each group gets. Anyway, the online tutorial has proven invaluable for giving students somewhere to go to reinforce the things they learn face-to-face in class. This tutorial also gives both the teachers and the students an overview of what the sessions involve.

The other is a more general Library Research Skills for Education Students tutorial and is based on the different aspects of information literacy: the skills and knowledge around analysing a research need, being aware of resources available, forming search expressions, searching and modifying searches in key resources, accessing and managing information.

I’m a fan of libguides because they utilise a number of different applications and allow quick updating and changing of information. If you have any suggestions or want them linked into your online course let me know.
