Checking new titles via the catalogue

New titles

The catalogue has reinstated the new titles list for a while now. You are able to check all the books arriving at a particular campus and filter by subject term, author name and so on. The example above filters brunswick titles for the last 4 weeks by call no area 370s (education). I’ve entered “37″ so that it picks up from 370-379.

Recent education books arriving at Brunswick include:

Summer reading

December 4, 2008

The Library has a good range of novels that you can hold and have brought over from any campus. See for example:

′Darkmans′ is a very modern book‚ set in Ashford (a ridiculously modern town)‚ about two very old−fashioned subjects: love and jealousy. It′s also a book about invasion‚ obsession‚ displacement and possession‚ about comedy‚ art‚ prescription drugs and chiropody. And the main character? The past‚ which creeps up on the present and whispers something quite dark − quite unspeakable − into its ear. (From Publisher’s website)

It is June 1962. In a hotel on the Dorset coast, overlooking Chesil Beach, Edward and Florence, who got married that morning, are sitting down to dinner in their room. Neither is entirely able to suppress their anxieties about the wedding night to come. ON CHESIL BEACH is another masterwork from Ian McEwan – a story about how the entire course of a life can be changed by a gesture not made or a word not spoken. (From Publisher’s website)

Ever since he can remember, Animal has gone on all fours, the catastrophic result of what happened on That Night when, thanks to an American chemical company, the Apocalypse visited his slum. Now not quite twenty, he leads a hand-to-mouth existence with his dog Jara and a crazy old nun called Ma Franci, and spends his nights fantasising about Nisha, the daughter of a local musician, and wondering what it must be like to get laid. When a young American doctor, Elli Barber, comes to town to open a free clinic for the still suffering townsfolk – only to find herself struggling to convince them that she isn’t there to do the dirty work of the ‘Kampani’ – Animal plunges into a web of intrigues, scams and plots with the unabashed aim of turning events to his own advantage. Compellingly honest, entertaining and entirely without self-pity, Animal’s account lights our way into his dark world with flashes of pure joy – from the very first page all the way to the story’s explosive ending. Changez is living an immigrant’s dream of America. He thrives on the energy of New York, his work at an elite firm, and his budding relationship. For a time, it seems that nothing will stand in the way of his meteoric rise to success. But in the wake of September 11, Changez finds his relationship crumbling and his exalted status overturned. Allegiances are subsequently unearthed, proving themselves more fundamental than money, power and maybe even love. (From Publisher’s website)

THE GATHERING is a family epic, condensed and clarified through the remarkable lens of Anne Enright’s unblinking eye. It is also a sexual history: tracing the line of hurt and redemption through three generations – starting with the grandmother, Ada Merriman – showing how memories warp and family secrets fester. This is a novel about love and disappointment, about thwarted lust and limitless desire, and how our fate is written in the body, not in the stars. (From Publisher’s website)

Textbooks for 2009

October 3, 2008

The RMIT Bookshop recently sent out a memo to staff, which included a reminder about submitting their lists of textbooks for 2009. These lists also form the basis for Library’s purchase of textbooks. When lists are submitted to the bookshop, books are purchased automatically for the Library.

We purchase multiple copies according to number of students expected and whether the item is a prescribed or recommended reading:

Prescribed textbooks
ONE copy of a text for every 10-20 students (maximum: 3 copies)

Recommended textbooks
ONE copy of a text for every 10-20 students (maximum: 7 copies)

Of course, you can also send any requests for the Library to purchase items directly to me or via the request form.

New education books

September 12, 2008

As mentioned previously, the catalogue now allows you to identify new education books. Here are some book covers for selected titles arriving in the last little while:

New titles

August 20, 2008

The Library has just added a new titles tab to the catalogue. It sorts by campus and then by call no area. So as you are browsing titles for a particular campus you might for example go to 370s for education.

I will no longer be using LibraryThing for new titles. We hope to be introducing further improvements to this function, including a primary sort by subject and RSS feeds.

UPDATE: Here is a link to new 370s (education) across all campuses.

GOBI alerts

May 5, 2008

There are about a dozen staff members across the School receiving GOBI Alerts from YPB, the major supplier of books to the Library. These are alerts of new book titles published in defined areas within education and were set up partly as a means for staff members to make recommendations to the Library on books to purchase.

I was reviewing these recently and thought that the number of items for specialist areas was too few so had in mind to cancel them. However, most of those staff members receiving these asked that they continue.

So I can continue with these for anyone who is interested and I will see if I can make any improvements to them. However, the other thing I can do is include anyone on a general education alert. This will mean one email a week listing about 20-30 books across the education area. If you are interested just let me know.

I mentioned a while ago the LibraryThing widget for looking at new books coming into the library. You are able to look at the whole list and the tag cloud for different subject areas,  but here also are some links for some new books around various subject headings

Summer reading

December 13, 2007

The Library has a good collection of novels available for summer reading. Keep an eye out for books we have on order from this year’s Booker shortlist, including the winner Anne Enright’s Gathering, as well as Nicola Barker’s Darkmans, Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Lloyd Jones’s Mr Pip.

Remember that any items not held at your home campus can be transferred across simply by placing a hold on them through the catalogue. Here are some suggestions from things published in recent times:

New library books on LibraryThing

October 9, 2007

The Library moved to a new catalogue this year and hopes to eventually allow users to access a new titles list. In the meantime, I have created a “widget” on this blog (on the right hand side, scroll down) that features new education books coming into the Library.
