Winner of the 2011 Children’s Book Council of Australia Picture Book of the Year and a great teacher resource for Upper Primary social studies!

This innovative picture book is comprised of two parts designed to be read simultaneously – one from the left, the other from the right. Page by page, we experience a day in the lives of two boys and their families – one from inner city Sydney, Australia and the other from a small, remote village in Morocco, North Africa.

These worlds couldn’t be further apart, yet with the showing of the parallel lives of the two families, we see a simple truth. We see that in the context of strikingly different lifestyles, remotely different countries, landscapes, differences of clothing and all. The families are essentially the same. They care for each other, they need to belong, to be loved by their loved ones and be a part of their community. The simple truth is that even with all these differences we are all the same. We are the mirror of each other.

Cabell’s Directories of Publishing Opportunities – have your say!

In 1978, Cabell Publishing, Inc. was founded to help professors, graduate students, and researchers publish their manuscripts in academic journals. This information includes addresses, phones, e-mails and web sites for our listed journals making Cabell’s Directories an easy point of reference when preparing to publish a manuscript. It also provide links directing you to guidelines and submission information.

The Directory helps you to determine which journals typically publish manuscripts similar to yours or could be the best fit for your manuscript. The index in each Directory helps you match the characteristics of your manuscript to the topic areas the journal emphasizes and acceptance rate. Ultimately, Cabell’s Directories of Publishing Opportunities is an excellent resource to use because it eliminates a lot of legwork as you prepare to publish your manuscript.

RMIT Library is currently trialling this database until this Friday 15th September. Summer Reading Club 2011 – ideas, activities and reading lists for teachers.

Run by ALIA, the Summer Reading Club program encourages literacy in more than 41,000 children Australian wide.

Summer Reading programs are traditionally run in public libraries during the summer school holiday period. They encourage young people of all ages in reading, writing, sharing books and other fun and engaging literature based activities. Reading programs are designed to be non-competitive, recreational and attract readers and non-readers alike from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds.

Approximately 165,000 books are read during the Summer Reading Club.

AustLit’s aim is to be the definitive virtual research environment and information resource for Australian literary, print, and narrative culture scholars, students, and the public.

AustLit is a non-profit collaboration between a network of researchers from Australian universities and the National Library of Australia, led by The University of Queensland (UQ). Our goal is to support research in and the teaching of Australian literary, narrative, and print cultures. This site provides authoritative information on creative and critical works by and relating to Australian writers, relevant cultural organisations, and industries.

New IELTS Subject Guide from the Library!

RMIT University Library has just released a new subject guide on IELTS! A great resource for students who need to sit the IELTS exam, and those who teach English as a second language.

You can find a variety of resources in the guide, from general information on IELTS to practical online websites to practice your English skills. Access a variety of online content consisting of video, audio, latest news feeds, and interactive activities. The range of content type supports the different learning styles of students.

This guide can be found in the ESL subject guide under Education and will be periodically updated with new content.

Education Support at Bundoora Library

Hello, my name is Louise Micallef and I work in Information Services assisting June Frost with supporting students and staff in the School of Education. I am based at the Bundoora Library and am available on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays between 8.30 – 4.30pm. My email address is louise.micallef@rmit.edu.au.

I completed my Graduate Diploma of Education (secondary) here at RMIT way back in 2003. I enjoy reading non-fiction, particularly in the areas of philosophy, natural history and archaeology as well as general fiction and children’s literature. You will probably see me working at the Information Desk at Bundoora Library so feel free to come and say hello and I can assist you with finding and using the library’s excellent Education resources!

New Junior Fiction in the Library

If you enjoyed the Twilight series and are a fan of epic fantasy fiction, you’ll love Cassandra Clare’s series, The Mortal Instruments. The series follows the dangerous and exciting lives of a race of ‘not quite human’ people called The Nephilim, who unbeknown to human kind, use their super powers and ancient magic to save earth from mass invasion of demons from other worlds. Of course there is the inescapable interaction with the human world and so rises interludes of love, fear, loathing and admiration. The plot follows battles of good versus evil where werewolves, vampires, warlocks, fairies and everything in-between, fight for their lives. With mixes of love and romance of all persuasions, the novels cleverly appeal to both males and females of all ages. The movies are also on the way.
The author has recently written a prequel series called The Infernal devices and the Library has the first book in this series also.
